Like all astromech droids, Artoo-Detoo<color> is designed to
operate in deep space, interfacing with fighter craft and computer systems to
augment the capabilities of ships and their pilots, usually from a socket
behind the cockpit. He monitors and diagnoses flight performance, maps and
stores hyperspace data, and pinpoints technical errors or faulty computer
coding. He is also well-versed in starship repair for hundreds of styles
of spacecraft, and is able to exist in the vacuum of space indefinitely<color>.
Artoo<color> converses in a dense electronic language consisting primarily
of beeps<color>, chirps<color> and whistles<color>. He can understand
most forms of human speech but must have his own communications interpreted
by a starship's computers or an interpreter droid, such as C-3PO<color>.
